The name “Neighbor,” which began as a joke because our homes were next to each other, eventually became our shared identity.

Neighbor

“Neighbor” is a photographic story about coexistence, memory, and the way two people experience and record the same everyday life through different perspectives and different means. Its starting point lies in a shared period of life in the late 1990s, when routes, nights, and moments were almost instinctively shared.

During our outings, Dimitris used to sketch on small square note papers at bars, on walks, in the immediacy of the moment. I, on the other hand, was capturing with my camera the moments that caught my attention. On one side, photography functions as a record of the external world, capturing faces, movements, small events that may seem insignificant at the time but gain weight over time. On the other, drawing emerges instantly, like an internal gesture of the moment, without any intention of preservation, closer to lived experience than to an archive.

The work unfolds as a dialogue between these two ways of seeing. Where photography stabilizes time, drawing breaks it apart and reassembles it. The images do not function independently but in relation to one another, forming a field where experience is recorded simultaneously as an event and as memory.

A dual archive of memory that does not belong exclusively to either of us, but to the space time created between us.

At its core, “Neighbor” is not simply about documenting a friendship or a period, but about the way moments leave traces. It is an attempt to preserve something inherently ephemeral: shared presence, small coincidences, the sense that two lives can, for a while, move in the same rhythm.
