Wild boar hunting in the Athamanian Mountains
We started at two in the morning from Arta to reach our destination, Tzoumerka. We advanced for hours through dirt roads and difficult paths that only the locals know, to get to the point that was set by the previous day to the group meeting point. At dawn, the sunlight dispels the fog and reveals the landscape revealing the forest that stretches across the surrounding mountains; the mind is lost in a feast of colors and sounds.
This time finds us gathered around the fire with coffee and chestnuts; the hunters tell stories their previous hunting experiences. The area where the hunt will take place is defined by the nature borders created at the foot of the surrounding mountains.
First concern is to locate fresh marks that has left on passage of the wild boar. Hunters can know from the his footprints when he passed and where he is heading; his weight and its size. The most experienced hunters can, seeing them impurities of the animal, to talk even about its health, to know, if it is hit and where by someone else's bullets hunter. We are divided into four groups of two people and the first to find footprints alert the others. The area is literally combed.
After hours of hiking in the forest paths. A hunter from the first group he finds us, bringing us the news: "they have been found footprints". It took less than an hour to gather at the point where the first signs were found. The most experienced trackers confirm the presence of the animal informing the others where the prey should be and they give the instructions for the next stage, the crankcase.
The wild boar prefers difficult natural paths for its movements forest paths, ending in pastures with chestnuts and Oak trees. In the carteri, each hunter occupies the best one in his opinion place on one of the paths, in such a place that has good visibility but also protection from the destructive fury that seizes the animal, when it is wounded, in case he injures it. At the time when the carter is carried out, there is absolute silence from the hunters, under no circumstances should it frighten the wild boar. There are many examples with stories of wounded and frightened wild boars that have carried away anything in their path he was in front of them, injuring and even killing them misguided or sometimes unlucky hunters. As long as it lasted cartridge, even taking photos was limited.
Dogs take action. Their purpose is to locate and guide the prey to the carteria. We did not have to wait long and the dogs were heard coming; they have bells hung around their necks, and the sound of them is the warning that the wild boar and his pursuers are approaching; the agony is at an all-time high; the dogs are trying to bite the genitals organs of the pig making it run madly down the path.
The shot was heard throughout the surrounding area. We run towards the carteri and we find the hunter in a state of ecstasy, he quickly tries with bated breath to tell us what happened: His visibility was limited as a result of which he suddenly saw the wild boar in front of him at five meters, from the surprise he almost missed. With one good shot the seventy-five-pound wild boar fell dead.
Tied by the feet with a rope passed to a long stick, it is carried to the nearest clearing. Carrying it up the steep mountainside requires frequent stops and shift changes in carrying by the hunters. In the glade the coolest of the hunters with a knife opens her belly of the animal and throws the entrails into the forest. The game must be kept in the best possible condition for as long as the return lasts without being spoiled by the heat of the day.
The satisfaction of the result casts aside fatigue. After hunting, the best thing one can enjoy in Tzoumerka is good food and rest in one of the many villages that exist.
It is not the case that hunters always shoot with portama. But in the case, as it happens, the prey is tied to the car of the hunter who killed it and together with the others they roam the streets of the city to feasting the eyes of rival hunting parties. The distribution of the prey to the hunters is the last stage. It is peeled, cut into small pieces, weighed and distributed to those who took part in the hunt.
